Best Starting Credit Cards
There are a ton of credit cards, and tons and tons of companies that have their own credit card to support their brand. It can be very easy to sign up for several credit cards that are either easily beaten by others, or provide poor benefits.
Here is my list for 2026 of the best credit cards for High-school Students and College students that provide the best benefits, but also the best chance to approve you.
Discover Student Cash Back
This is my number one pick for the best starting credit card for any College student. They offer 5% cash back in rotating categories. Every 3 months, the 5% cash back changes. This could be gas, online shops and stores during holiday seasons, or even restaurants and grocery stores. For anyone in college, any one of those are huge expenses.
Another huge benefit is the unlimited cashback match your first year. That pretty much makes your 5% cash back 10% your first month which is a LOT of money saved when used correctly.
The Discover Student Cash card is known for being very generous towards younger applicants applying. Most people are accepted even without an income to be able to begin building credit. However, this card requires proof you are in college, not making it an option if you are not an student. It also has no annual fee, or replacement fees.
Chase Freedom Flex
The Chase Freedom Flex is very similar to Discover's Student Cash Card. They have 5% cash back on rotating categories, while also offering 3% cash back on dining and drugstores, and 1% on all other purchases. With a $0 annual fee, and a $200 sign up bonus if you spend $500 in the first 3 months, it is overall a very strong card, especially starting out. However, Chase is much less forthcoming than other companies when it comes to applying without a credit history. This is a great 2nd card to get once you have some established history, or if you already bank with Chase and have history with them. It is also smart to get somewhat into the Chase Ecosystem with a lot of later cards being part of what Chase offers.
This was my first credit card. This card was not my first choice, but still amazing for starting out. My first choice would've been the Discover Student Cash Back card, but I wanted an early start, and didn't qualify because I was still in high-school. This card is geared towards students (although they don't enforce proving that) with 3% cash back on dining and grocery stores, with 1% on everything else. Although not the best, it is still a great card, and an excellent card for your first card. Capital One is also known to be very open to giving people without any credit history a chance.
Capital One Savor Student Credit Card

Final Thoughts
The best credit card isn't really a simple answer. For some people to convince their parents to allow them to start building credit, a local bank they already finance with might be best for them. For college students, almost nothing can compete with Discover's Student Cash card. If not in college, the Capital One Savor "Student" card is a great option.
